Abstract
This study explored the relationship between parenting practices and family functioning in student mothers from the Centro Universitario del Norte, located in the community of Colotlán, Jalisco. Parenting practices were evaluated using the CuPre scale and family functioning using the APGAR scale. These were applied to n=67 mothers who were studying Psychology, Law, Nursing, Administration, Agribusiness, Anthropology, Accounting, Nutrition and Tourism. The results showed that 71.64% of the evaluated population presents adequate family functioning and only 1.49% shows family dysfunction. Furthermore, it was observed that 83.58% carry out adequate parenting practices, while 2.99% have inadequate parenting practices. Apparently, there is a relationship between the two mentioned variables, since it is shown that planned care and responsive practice of mothers are associated with family functioning. It is concluded that there is not a high percentage of inadequate parenting practice and dysfunctional family functioning in the Centro Universitario del Norte, so mothers are mostly attentive to their children, showing affection towards the infants. It is suggested that intervention programs aimed at mothers in institutions be increased, in order to provide young mothers with the tools for a better education for their children, as well as knowledge about how to implement parenting practices favorable to the development of the child. minor.
